What is sodium peroxodisulfate?

Sodium peroxodisulfate, also known as sodium persulfate (Na2S2O8), is a white crystalline salt. It is an oxidizing agent that is used in a variety of applications such as in the production of polymers and dyes, as a bleaching agent, and as a catalyst in chemical reactions. Sodium peroxodisulfate is soluble in water and decomposes upon heating to release oxygen gas. It is also a common ingredient in hair bleach and in the etching of printed circuit boards. Although it is generally considered safe to use, it can be harmful if swallowed or inhaled and can cause skin irritation or allergic reactions upon contact. Proper precautions should be taken when handling sodium peroxodisulfate.
